Abergavenny - Canal Walk

Formed in 1812 when the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal joined with the Monmouthshire Canal to transport coal, iron and limestone to the busy port of Newport and other towns in South Wales and the Midlands. Today the canal offers lovely views, peace, and tranquillity.

Airfield

Abergavenny Airfield is an unlicenced, but very friendly airfield with a well-kept grass runway. Runway length varies according to how much has been mown! Frank, the owner, will be certain to offer a cuppa on arrival. As an alternative to walking, 'The Hardwick' is a serious foodies' establishment less than 5 minutes walk from the aircraft parking (book in advance and allow plenty of time to sit and enjoy).

Walking Route

The walk follows the Usk Valley Walk across the river and up to the canal. We follow the canal from bridge 92 to 80, and wend our way back along quiet country lanes.

Starting the walk: Leave the airfield via a stile in the hedge about 200m NW of the aircraft parking, on the opposite side of the runway.
